Classroom Syllabus

Mission Statement:  Our mission at Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development School is to create college bound students with a deep commitment to public service and a true understanding of their leadership skills within the global community.

Course Overview:  This course describes the organization and operation of government on the local, state, and national levels. Students will be exposed to the major ideas, protections, privileges, structures, and economic systems that affect the life of a citizen in the United States political system.  Students will also be able to identify some of the challenges in United States foreign policy and other issues facing Americans as well as understand their role (rights and responsibilities) as citizens at all levels of government and in the world today.

Student Evaluation:

            Projects: 25%

            Tests: 20%

            Bellringers/Exit Slips: 10%

            Class work: 15%

            Homework: 15%

            Quizzes: 15%

            ** History Fair Project: 200 points **

`           History Fair will be done during the 2^nd and 3^rd nine weeks.  All students must complete a History Fair report.

            (Projects NOT on time will be accepted late with 10 points deducted each day it is late.)

Homework/Late Work Policy:         Students are expected to use the blogs and teachers’ calendars to stay on top of assignments.  If a student should miss class for any reason they are expected to use both of these avenues to find out what assignments were missed. When they return to class, students should check the make-up work folder in the front of the classroom for any necessary handouts/worksheets.  ALL students with excused absences will be allowed the same amount of days as absent to make up ANY assignment. After this time, the assignment will roll over into late work status.  If a student is present on the day an assignment is due and fails to turn the work in, it is considered late.  During the first quarter, students are allowed THREE late work passes.  A late work pass means the student may submit late work one class period after the original due date.  In addition, the student will be submitting the work for a maximum of 75% of the original credit.  Beginning in the second quarter, absolutely no late work will be accepted.  This means work submitted after a due date will be considered late, and will not be accepted for credit. This applies to every class of Team 7B.

Recycled work: Please note that students have the opportunity to recycle assignments.  Assignments which are recyclable will be dependent upon individual teacher discretion.  Students who choose to recycle an assignment can earn up to half of the missed points. For example, if a student earns a 50 on an assignment then he or she may recycle for up to a 75. Recycling does not guarantee a student the maximum amount of points possible.  Meaning, the afore mentioned student is not guaranteed a 75, but can earn up to a 75 depending on the quality of work.

Grading Scale:                       Students will be evaluated in accordance with the standard Duval County Public Schools’ grading scale.

Progress Reports:                  Progress Reports will be issued once every nine weeks.  If a student is performing below standard, I will issue a progress report and a scholarship warning.  Students will have 2 days to return it signed.

Class Participation:               Students are expected to contribute to the class.  Students can better prepare themselves by reading assigned material and familiarize themselves with notions discussed in class.

Projects:                     Projects will be assigned with each unit of study.  It is mandatory that each student completes one project.  Students have the opportunity to complete an extra assignment for extra credit.  The projects are to be completed by the students only.  Students can receive guidance from their parent and teacher.  Students will be expected to provide an annotated bibliography for each project.  Projects are due on the assigned days.  Ten points will be deducted for each day the project is late.
