Study Guide Update

Due to the fact that the online textbook does not provide you with page numbers, I will only be grading the worksheet and the first 5 questions (or any 5 questions) on the study guide.  For those students that completed all or most of their study guide in class, they will receive extra credit.

Class Update

  • All classes received a graphic organizer assignment on Thursday (1/23, A-Day) & Friday (1/24, B-Day).  This assignment is worth 20 points and will be due no later than Monday (1/27, A-Day) & Tuesday (1/28, B-Day).  The directions for the assignment are posted below.  Remember, there is NO LATE WORK FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR
    • FROM BILL TO LAW GRAPHIC ORGANIZER
Once you are finished with the 8 steps of how a bill becomes a law, create your OWN graphic organizer on the back.  Write out the 8 steps in order and provide a visual to assist you in remembering each step.  You are welcome to be as creative as you would like in how your graphic organizer will look.  For example, you can simply draw 8 boxes with arrows pointing from each step to the next, or it can resemble an elaborate board game.  Whatever you choose, make sure it has all of the necessary requirements listed below.
Each step is correctly written out in the correct order – 10 POINTS
Visuals are provided for each step – 5 POINTS
Assignment should be neat and show evidence of an effort – 5 POINTS
  • There will be a test on the Legislative branch, basic powers of each branch, checks & balances, and how a bill becomes a law on Wednesday, 1/29 (A-Day) & Thursday, 1/30 (B-Day).  Students will receive review questions to help them study on Monday, 1/27 (A-Day) & Tuesday, 1/28 (B-Day).  The test will be 30 multiple choice questions and will be worth 60 points.  Students that score below 80% will have an opportunity to recycle.

  • Students with a current overall grade below 75% received a scholarship warning in the form of a progress report on Dec. 17th and 18th.  These were to be signed and returned after the break, but many seemed to have gotten "lost".  For those that received new scholarship warnings, they will be due by the end of the week with a parent signature.

Chapter 6 project
Directions: Choose one of the following to complete. Make sure to follow all steps. Your project must include a bibliography containing a minimum of 2 sources, Wikipedia is not a reliable source. Your bibliography must be in MLA format.

1.    A mural is a large painting that represents something that is happening in our community or world by using only pictures. The pictures represent the message that someone is trying to get across. Choose 5 amendments you feel should go together. Using a LARGE poster board, create a mural of the 5 amendments you chose. Your pictures can be hand drawn, cut out of a magazine, or actual pictures you take. You should have less than 5 words on your mural. Your poster should be covered in visuals. Using the extended response rubric, write an explanation of your mural. Include the 5 amendments you choose and why you think they go together.
a.    Rubric:
Points
Description
20
Bibliography is included with poster board. A minimum of 2 sources are used. Sources are in MLA format. Bibliography is typed or in blue or black ink.
50
Mural is on a large poster board. Mural is colorful and easy to understand. Creative designs and ideas are applied to the mural. Visuals accurately represent the Amendments. Visuals are clear.
30
Extended Response is typed or written in blue or black ink. Extended response includes details and support. Extended response is neat and free of errors. At least one page in length (12 point font, double spaced).

2.    Create a guide to the 27 amendments. This should be put together like a book. You will show each amendment with at least one visual and a brief description of the amendment. You can have 2 to 3 amendments on each page but no more than 3. Don’t forget to have a title and table of contents.  Using the extended response rubric, write an extended response on which of the amendments is the most important. Explain your answer using support from the book or research.

Four Elements of an Extended Response

1
Restate the thesis.  This is re-stating the question to include clues for the reader about the direction that your text will be taking. Remember, the first sentence tells the reader what you are going to tell them.

2
Include two/three ideas/statements to support the thesis.
The body of the response tells the reader what you have to say. This is where you use F.R.I.E.S.S.
Facts
Reason
Incident
Examples
Statistics
Sensory Details

3

Include two/three details to support the three ideas/statements.

4
Wrap-up your response by telling the reader what you just told them. This is best accomplished by rephrasing the thesis statement.
