Chapter 4, Section 4 Notes
The Maurya Empire
·         India was made up of warring states.
·         Around 321 BC, Chandragupta came to power and grew his kingdom into the Maurya Empire.
Absolute Power
·         He had absolute power over his people.
·         He had a huge army to crush revolts.
·         Wealth came from farming but traded with Greece, China, and Rome.
His Legacy
·         Even though he was a rough leader, he did some good for his people.
·         Built irrigation systems.
·         Cleared forests.
·         Built roadways to help trade.
Asoka’s leadership
·         Asoka took power in 273 BC.
·         During the beginning of his rules, he was very warlike.
·         After the Battle of Kalinga, he converted to Buddhism.
Buddhist Ruler
·         Asoka spread the teachings of Buddha.
·         Built hospitals for his people, who he said were his children.
·         Issued writings of moral advice.
·         Encouraged truthfulness and tolerance.
